Budgets and accounting

Setting a budget, keeping the books and preparing annual accounts that meet OSCR and Companies House requirements.

Budgets

A budget is the board's plan for the year in money: what you expect to receive, what you intend to spend and what is left. Build it from your activity plan, be honest about uncertain income, and compare actual figures with it every quarter so that problems show early. Restricted grants must be tracked separately from unrestricted funds.

Accounts

What your annual accounts must contain depends on your legal structure, your income and whether you are a charity. Receipts and payments accounts are enough for many small charities; larger ones and all companies need accruals accounts. OSCR publishes guidance and example accounts for each format, and Companies House has its own filing deadlines.

FVA's finance team can prepare accounts, carry out independent examinations, and advise treasurers who are taking on the role for the first time.
