Community halls and buildings across Fife are run by volunteer committees, and they face the same responsibilities as any building owner: fire safety, electrical and gas safety, asbestos where it exists, accessibility, insurance, licensing for events that sell alcohol or use music, and looking after the people who hire the space.
- Keep a maintenance plan and a sinking fund for the big repairs that come round every few years.
- Have clear hire terms, a booking system and a way of taking payment.
- Carry out and record risk assessments and the statutory safety checks.
- Consider the running costs, particularly energy, before you commit to opening hours.
FVA can advise hall committees on governance and finance, help with funding applications for improvements, and put you in touch with other halls in Fife facing the same issues.
