Managing risk

Identifying what could go wrong, deciding what to do about it, and keeping a risk register the board actually uses.

Managing risk is not about avoiding everything that might go wrong; it is about knowing what could, deciding what level of risk you accept, and acting on the risks that matter. Funders and regulators expect boards to show they have done this.

  • List the risks to your people, your money, your reputation, your activities and your compliance with the law.
  • Score each for how likely it is and how serious it would be.
  • Decide, for each, whether to avoid it, reduce it, insure against it, or accept it.
  • Record this in a risk register, name who owns each risk, and review it at board meetings.

Risk assessments for particular activities, such as events, trips or working with vulnerable people, sit underneath the register. FVA can provide templates and work through your register with you.
