Community ownership gives an organisation control of a building or land for the long term, and with it responsibility for everything from insurance to the roof. Routes to ownership include buying on the open market, asset transfer from a public body, and the community right to buy under the Land Reform (Scotland) Acts, which lets an eligible community body register an interest in land and buildings, and in some circumstances buy abandoned, neglected or detrimental land.
The right to buy has strict rules about the community body's constitution and membership, so it needs planning well ahead of any opportunity. The Community Ownership Support Service (part of the Development Trusts Association Scotland) provides specialist help, and FVA can support you with the organisational side: structure, governance, business planning and funding.
