Insurance

The insurance a third sector organisation needs, and how to work out what cover is right for you.

Insurance protects your organisation, and the people who run it, when something goes wrong. What you need depends on what you do, but the main types are:

  • Public liability: injury or damage to members of the public arising from your activities. Almost every organisation that meets the public needs this, and venues and funders will ask for it.
  • Employers' liability: a legal requirement if you employ anyone, and usually needed if you have volunteers.
  • Trustee indemnity: protects trustees against personal claims for honest mistakes.
  • Professional indemnity: if you give advice or provide a professional service.
  • Buildings, contents and equipment, and motor cover for vehicles, including volunteers who drive for you.

Several insurers specialise in charities and community groups. Read the conditions carefully, particularly around checks on volunteers and activities that are excluded. FVA can help you think through what cover you need before you speak to a broker.
