Health and safety law applies to voluntary organisations as well as businesses, but what it requires is proportionate: a small group running a weekly lunch club needs far less than an organisation with premises and staff. The basics are the same for everyone:
- a written health and safety policy if you have five or more employees, and a simple statement of responsibilities in any case
- risk assessments for your activities, your premises and any equipment
- first aid arrangements and a way of recording accidents
- fire safety in any building you control
- training and information for the people doing the work, including volunteers
FVA runs health and safety training and can review your arrangements. The Health and Safety Executive publishes free guidance written for small organisations.
