Volunteer policies

The policies that protect volunteers and the organisations that involve them.

Volunteers are not employees, and a volunteering relationship should not look like a contract, but volunteers still need to know what is expected of them and what they can expect in return. A short volunteer policy, or volunteer agreement, is the foundation. Alongside it most organisations need:

  • role descriptions for each volunteering role
  • a recruitment and selection process, including PVG or disclosure checks where the role requires them
  • induction, training, support and supervision arrangements
  • expenses: how out-of-pocket costs are reimbursed
  • a problem-solving procedure for concerns raised by or about a volunteer
  • equality, health and safety, data protection and safeguarding, applied to volunteers as well as staff

FVA supports organisations to develop these and to work towards the Volunteer Friendly Award, which recognises good practice in volunteer involvement.
