Employment policies

The policies and documents an employer must have, and those that make managing staff easier.

Some employment documents are required by law; others are simply what a good employer has. The essentials:

  • a written statement of terms and conditions for each employee, and a contract of employment
  • disciplinary and grievance procedures, which the law requires you to set out in writing
  • a health and safety policy if you have five or more staff
  • pay, hours and leave arrangements that meet the National Minimum Wage, working time and holiday rules, and a workplace pension
  • policies on equality, flexible working, family leave, sickness absence, data protection and whistleblowing

Public funders in Scotland also expect Fair Work First commitments, including paying the real Living Wage. FVA can provide model policies and check yours against current law, and our finance team can advise on pay and payroll.
