Delivering Differently (2017 to 2021)
Funded by the Scottish Government's Employability Innovation and Integration Fund, Delivering Differently (DD) commenced in October 2017 as a cross-partnership 18-month 'strategic implementation' project. Delivering Differently worked with partners, providers and people with lived experience of mental health problems to improve employment outcomes for people in Fife with experience of mental health issues.
In April 2019 the team received continuation funding from See Me Scotland to continue the programme of work with a shift in focus to personal outcomes and challenging mental health-related stigma in key sectors.
The project was coordinated and delivered by Fife Voluntary Action and reported to both Fife Health & Social Care Partnership (H&SCP) and the Opportunities Fife Partnership (OFP).
The project vision was updated and refined in the light of the project findings between October 2017 and March 2019.
| "Our vision is that people with mental health problems in Fife are supported to aspire in life and work and can easily access appropriate support as and when they are ready to make the journey (back) into work." |
Over the 18 months of the programme, Delivering Differently made 36 recommendations to both OFP and H&SCP, the majority of which have been actioned. A small number remain in progress.
The final report for the Scottish Government-funded part of the programme was launched on 15 May 2019. Over 160 participants at the launch event generated further conversaation about what needs to happen next in Fife. The findings also informed the revised Fife Mental Health Strategy 2020-2024.
From Delivering Differently, the following FVA projects emerged:
- Team Experience
- Fife Mental Health Peer Support Network
- the creation of the Fife Mental Health Employability Pathway and Directory of Services
- the revival of the third sector mental health forum
- a continued investment in growing the voice of experience in service design and delivery as implemented in No One Left Behind Fife.

A Job Worth Doing: the third sector as an employer in Fife (2019)
A Job Worth Doing has been produced by Fife Voluntary Action (FVA), the Third Sector Interface for the Fife Council area, after conducting research during the latter part of 2017. The report looks at the third sector in Fife as an employer - specifically scale, make-up, challenges and opportunities for the sector as an employer. The research touched on unpaid work, or volunteering, but the key focus was on paid employment.
According to data from OSCR (the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator) there are approximately 1,350 charities registered in Fife of which 352 employ around 7,300 staff between them. The vast majority of these 293 (83%), employ fewer than 10 staff with a small number (7) each employing over 250 staff.
The report includes data provided by 104 third sector employers, which accounts for approximately 29% of all third sector employers in Fife. It also includes information on the 2,606 third sector staff that they employ - accounting for around 35.4% of all third sector employees in the area. The majority of respondents (74%) were local and they employed 50.2% of staff included in the survey.
