This is a Public Health Scotland accredited, two-day course that equips participants with the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to someone at risk of suicide in a safe, supportive and practical way.

Suicide can affect anyone and knowing how to respond when someone may be at risk is a vital skill in both personal and professional contexts. Attendance on both days is required to gain an official Public Health Scotland certificate.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to recognise when someone may be thinking about suicide
  • Develop the confidence to ask directly about suicide and respond safely
  • Build practical skills to provide immediate "suicide first aid" and support safely
  • Learn how to develop a collaborative safety plan and connect someone for further support
  • Explore how attitudes, stigma and communication impact help-seeking and intervention

The course is highly interactive and practice-focused, using facilitated discussion, real-life scenarios, and structured simulations to build confidence in applying skills.

Emphasis is placed on compassion, direct communication, and supporting people with dignity and respect, even in high-pressure situations.

Refreshments, tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by Public Health Scotland and delivered on behalf of NHS Fife.

Participants receive a Public Health Scotland certificate on successful completion.
