People granted refugee status or leave to remain can usually claim the same benefits as other residents, including Universal Credit and Scottish benefits from Social Security Scotland. People seeking asylum are normally supported by the Home Office instead, through asylum support and accommodation, and cannot claim mainstream benefits.
The rules are complicated and depend on your status and any conditions attached to it. Get advice before you apply: Citizens Advice and Rights Fife gives free, confidential advice on benefits, and Fife Migrants Forum can help with language support. Fife Council's welfare support team can also help with the Scottish Welfare Fund and council tax reduction.
