- Agree the need and purpose with the people who will be involved.
- Form a steering group and choose a name (check it is not already in use with OSCR and Companies House).
- Choose a legal structure and adopt a constitution or articles. We can supply model documents.
- Recruit a committee or board, and agree who will be the office bearers.
- Open a bank account in the organisation's name; see our guidance on bank accounts, and allow several weeks.
- Register with OSCR, Companies House or both, if your structure requires it.
- Put the essential policies in place: finance, safeguarding if you work with children or vulnerable adults, data protection, health and safety, and insurance.
- Plan your first year's activity and budget, and look at applying for funding.
