For organisations

Need and purpose

Before you set up a new organisation, be clear about the need it will meet and whether somebody is already meeting it.

Start with the need

Funders, partners and future members will all ask the same question: what difference will this organisation make, and for whom? Write down the problem you want to address, the people it affects and what would be different if you succeed. Evidence helps, whether that is local statistics, a survey, or simply the number of people who have asked for the service.

Check what already exists

Fife has thousands of community groups and charities. Search the directory of services before you start. Joining or partnering with an existing organisation is often quicker than starting a new one, and funders are wary of duplication.

Write a clear purpose

A short statement of your purposes will become the heart of your constitution and the test for every decision you make. If you intend to register as a charity, the purposes must fit the charitable purposes in the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. We can check a draft for you.
