We're sharing some of the projects that received funding in Year 3 of the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund. Some of these stories might inspire you to apply for funding in Year 4!

Read all about how Furniture Plus used their funding to roll out Health and Wellbeing Woodwork Workshops...

The free-of-charge Health and Wellbeing Woodwork course aimed to teach members of the local community new skills in woodworking and woodturning, as well as providing a space to meet others, reduce feelings of isolation, and help to build confidence.

The material used in the workshop is reclaimed wood from pallets, bed slats, and scrap wood, or items of furniture that need refurbished or repaired, thus preventing landfill and emphasising the importance of re-use to the attendees.

A wide range of items were created. Some people have been highly creative and made items such as garden tables, bird boxes, wooden trays, wooden bowls, and other decorative items. Others have taken on restoration projects such as garden benches and other items of furniture. All items that were made or restored by participants were made for them to take home with no charge.

Castle Furniture plan to repeat this type of workshop with a constant throughput of adult learners. They welcome participants who would like to build confidence, reduce isolation, and improve mental health.

Participants have become more connected and, in some instances, have even formed new friendships outside of the project. The project has improved the mental health of participants which was checked before and after taking part. The project has also helped to tackle poverty as they were able to gift a bed and mattress to a client who needed it.

    Clients said:

“My woodworking skills have come on leaps and bounds. I feel able to consider making toys for my grandchildren. Prior to the workshops, I was unable to use a saw accurately, but now I feel able to make simple joints. Without the course I wouldn’t have felt confident to make anything for other people.”

“I felt I was drifting after the death of my wife, but the workshops have given my life a new purpose. I’ve decided to continue with woodworking as a hobby – giving me a reason to get up in the morning.”
