Read all about how Seescape used their funding to roll out Counselling and Sighted Guide Volunteer Training...
Seescape was awarded funding in Year 3 to deliver counselling and sighted guide training. People living in Fife who have a physical disability, and volunteers/carers who support people with a visual impairment was offered the chance to take part in the project.
Some participants didn’t think they needed counselling in the beginning, but found the experience rewarding as they opened up and were able to disclose issues that otherwise would have remained festering emotionally.
Some clients had barriers to counselling, for example, some older clients felt they should keep a ‘stiff upper lip’. However, they reported that by feeling heard, learning it was okay to cry, and let the anger and frustration out, their psychological wellbeing has benefited.
Clients reported that as a result of the counselling, they had learned emotional and practical coping strategies to help them with their challenges and how to tackle negative feelings. Most clients felt hopeless in their first session but gradually started to feel more positive about their situation, their self-confidence improved, and this lead to increased independence.
Seescape delivered counselling for 42 clients, ran eight sighted guide volunteer training sessions, and trained 35 volunteers which was more than they’d initially expected to do. Their counselling clients all reported back at the end of their sessions that they were satisfied or very satisfied.
Clients said:
“We feel much more confident supporting people with a visual impairment in our building and during activities. Elaina, the trainer, was really knowledgeable and approachable.”
“The course was a fantastic insight to what a visually impaired person feels when doing everyday tasks.”
