  • SP Energy Networks’ Mossmorran Substation Consultation Events

    Created: 6/11/2026

SP Energy Networks has published revised plans for essential upgrades to the electricity transmission network in Fife. It’s part of long‑term investment to support the country’s transition to clean energy and ensure a secure and reliable power supply for future generations.

As electricity demand across Scotland is expected to double by 2050, SP Energy Networks is proposing to extend its Mossmorran substation near Cowdenbeath and increase the voltage of existing overhead transmission lines in Fife.

Much of Scotland’s transmission network was built between 50 and 100 years ago. While it has evolved over time, sections of the network are now nearing operational limits at a time when more wind, solar and battery storage projects are seeking to connect.

To accommodate this growth, the voltage of overhead lines between Tealing and Kincardine will increase from 275kV to 400kV. This requires upgrades at Mossmorran and Westfield substations, along with a new substation at Conland, north of Leslie.

These upgrades will create additional capacity on the network, enabling more renewable energy to be transported efficiently from where it is generated to homes and businesses across the country.

SP Energy Networks is seeking feedback from local communities on the updated proposals to extend Mossmorran substation, and comments received during this consultation will help shape the final design for the substation layout, access, drainage and landscaping.

Local residents are invited to meet the project team, view the updated plans and ask questions at the following community drop-in events:

    • Tuesday 23 June, 2pm–7pm Auchtertool Village Hall, Main Street, Auchtertool, KY2 5XW
    • Wednesday 24 June, 11am–4pm Crossgates Royal British Legion, 60 Main Street, Crossgates, Cowdenbeath, KY4 8AW
