  • British Muslims give 4x more to charity and volunteer more than the British average

    Created: 4/17/2024

A new report by Blue State aimed to understand and uncover key behaviours, trends and drivers in Muslim giving.

As well as surveying 1,000+ UK adult Muslims they held a number of focus groups across age groups to gain a sense of how and why people give their Zakat (compulsory giving of a set proportion of one's wealth to charity), if it’s just during Ramadan and what charities can do to build their motivation to donate.

The results have unveiled the generosity this group represents:

    • UK Muslims gave 4x more in the last 12 months than UK average
    • Almost half (49%) are planning to give more to charity in the next year
    • 1 in 2 are open to giving their Zakat to charitable organisations
    • Those earning £75,000-£99,999 gave on average over 10x the UK-wide baseline in the same age group
    • Outside of monetary donations, a greater number of Muslims gave time to volunteer in person last year (17% vs 11% UK average)
    • They are more involved with community organisations (13% vs 7%), in community fundraising events (21% vs 10%), and personal challenges such as marathons (15% vs 8%)
