If you have parenting experience and 2-3 hours a week to spare, why not become a Home-Visiting Volunteer with Home-Start Kirkcaldy and help out a family with young children? Home-Start Kirkcaldy recruits and trains volunteers who are then matched up with a family with young children. The families are referred to us because they need a bit of support (maybe mum has post-natal depression, is isolated, new to the area, there?s lots of children) and our volunteers visit once a week to help out. Our volunteers help with all sorts of practical tasks such as going shopping, getting to appointments, helping out with the children, being a listening ear. Travel and any other out-of-pocket expenses are paid. Training courses for new volunteers run throughout the year
Please contact us to find out when this opportunity takes place.
no upper age limit has been specified
Volunteers must attend a preparation course which runs one day a week for 5 weeks. Once the course is completed we have volunteer sessions every month, alternating between a training session on a related topic (e.g. child protection, addiction, play & child development) and our volunteer support group. Once matched with a family volunteers receive formal support & supervision sessions every 4 - 6 weeks, with ad-hoc support as and when needed
Out of pocket expenses paid?
Yes - Yes
No formal qualifications are asked for. Volunteers must have parenting experience (this does not necessarily mean they have had their own children, e.g. they may have been involved in bringing up younger siblings). Must have a non-judgemental attitude and understand the pressures involved in bringing up young children. Volunteers will be subject to PVG check
Home-Start cover Kirkcaldy, Kinghorn, Burntisland and Cardenden. Volunteers transport expenses are reimbursed and volunteers preferences on areas/availability of transport are taken into account when matched with the family.
This opportunity is compatible with the Saltire Awards for volunteers aged 12-25.
