Discretionary payments are a financial contribution Greener Kirkcaldy provide to participants who find themselves in crisis for a short period, with either no gas or electricity, depending on their system.
They apply these payments directly onto their energy supply meters to meet a short-term energy crisis. The length can vary and each advisor shall have to judge how much energy each participant needs to resolve the immediate crisis.
Here at Greener Kirkcaldy (Cosy Kingdom) they want to support all their participants in what is becoming a tough time for many participants in Fife. Although they have a small discretionary fund, it is important to give out all the information available first before they offer their fund to ensure the participant does not miss out on what can prove to be larger funds available.
Each participant or supporting partner will be asked if they have applied for the following statutory body funds before they can access Greener Kirkcaldy's discretionary funds.
All participants can request a benefit advance of Universal Credit via their work coach. From January, they can request this online via their journal.
Contact your work coach through the journal or a visit to your local job centre
Scottish Welfare Fund - Crisis Grant
They can access this 3 times in a calendar year. There is no financial limit, participants should request how much money they need to overcome the crisis.

Social Work Department
They have 2 discretionary funding pots for people in crisis.
Section 22 - children in need.
Section 12 - Adults in need, who are vulnerable, elderly, have a mental illness or disability.
Contact the Duty Social Worker on 03451 551 503, who will visit the house and apply funds to the meter.
The participant can engage with their supplier and ask if they would put a payment on the meter, they have seen some receiving up to £200 credit.
If participants have attempted to access all of the above, they can provide additional support through their discretionary fund.
Other agencies may also have discretionary funding available if participant is already engaging with them.

• Single person £10 per week
• Couple £15 per week
• Small family £20 per week
• Large family £25 a week
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, they cannot grant a participant assistance from the discretionary fund more than twice per financial year. In exceptional circumstances, please contact Bruce McCall, Project Manager for approval. In his absence, contact Dianne Girvan, Office Manager.
