A 12-day celebration of volunteering in Fife starts on 01 June, with the beginning of Volunteers’ Week.

The first week in June has been designated as Volunteers’ Week since 1984, a week to celebrate existing volunteers and encourage more people to become volunteers, and this year the event is even bigger than normal. This year the event has been extended to 12 days (1-12 June) to coincide with the Queen's official birthday, given her role as Patron of hundreds of charities. This means there is longer to acknowledge, recognise and celebrate volunteers and volunteering across the Kingdom.

Fife Voluntary Action (FVA) will be hosting events and activities on each of the 12 days of the ‘week’ meaning there will be something for everyone to take part in.

The week kicks off with a fabulous night at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes when FVA host’s their annual Volunteering and Voluntary Sector awards.

With categories such as Volunteering into Work Award (for anyone who used volunteering as a stepping stone into employment), Inspirational Volunteer Award, Young Volunteer Award (under the age of 25) as well as Volunteer of the Year Award, there will be a room full of valued, valuable and excited volunteers!

As part of the week, FVA will also be launching a new service to inform would-be volunteers of the latest volunteering opportunities. This will take the form of an e-bulletin which anyone can sign up for on their website. During the week FVA will be holding a competition, called ‘Where’s Volly?’ Every day FVA will be posting clues on social media as to where their volunteer is in Fife and what voluntary organisation they are visiting. There will be three clues each day from 8am, before the answers are revealed at 4pm. So check out FVA’s Twitter and Facebook.

Volunteers have played an important part in the collection of donations for the refugees who have come to live in Fife. Local people’s generosity was such that there was more items than the refugees needed immediately. So volunteers again stepped in and helped to deliver ‘The Big Sale’ – a charity sale of donated children’s clothes, toys and books as well as household items. Every penny raised will benefit refugees living in Fife.

The sale will be held on 03 June from 12-4.00pm in Oakley Community Centre, with free tea, coffee and biscuits (served by volunteers!) and local information and support organisations such as Citizens Advice and Rights Fife, also on hand.

Managers and others who support and recruit volunteers are also being considered and we have three events specifically aimed at them throughout the week.

Kenny Murphy, Chief Executive Office, Fife Voluntary Action said: “Volunteers’ Week gives us an ideal opportunity to highlight the crucial role volunteers play in Fife society as well as demonstrating the value of becoming a volunteer.”
