Trustee Forum: The Trustee Journey – Recruiting, Retaining and Developing Trustees
Created: 25/10/2026
Being a trustee can be incredibly rewarding, offering opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence and make a difference in your community. But finding new trustees, keeping them involved and making sure your board has the right mix of skills can be challenging.
Following feedback from our Trustee Forum launch, this event will explore the trustee journey, from taking on the role for the first time to developing skills, experience and confidence along the way.
We'll hear from a guest speaker who will share their personal experience of being a trustee, including the challenges they've faced, lessons learned and what they wish they'd known when they started.
Our FVA colleague Pamela, from the Volunteer Development Team, will then deliver a practical Get on Board session, exploring how organisations can attract, recruit and retain trustees. This will include how a board skills matrix can help identify existing strengths, skills gaps and future recruitment needs.
We'll also explore what makes an effective board and introduce FVA's developing Governance Board Review, which is being designed and launched to help community organisations reflect on how their boards operate and identify areas for development.
There will be opportunities to share experiences, discuss common challenges and learn from other trustees.
This event includes: A real trustee journey and lessons learned Practical guidance on recruiting, retaining and developing trustees An introduction to using a board skills matrix to support recruitment and succession planning An opportunity to explore board effectiveness and FVA's developing Governance Board Review tool Opportunities to share experiences and learn from other trustees
Who should attend? Trustees, board members and committee members from charities and community organisations across Fife, whether you're new to the role or have years of experience.
