CHAS on Making Volunteer Recruitment Clearer, Easier and More Accessible
Created: 28/09/2026
Finding the right volunteers isn't simply about attracting more people. It's about helping people understand what they're signing up for and making it easy for them to find an opportunity that fits their lives.
That was the challenge facing CHAS, which wanted to strengthen its volunteer recruitment across a range of opportunities, including retail, events and its More Than a Hospice appeal.
The organisation took a closer look at how it advertised its roles and made some simple but important changes. Instead of using broad descriptions, CHAS became more specific about the role, location, shifts and level of commitment involved, while still making sure there were flexible ways for people to get involved.
Clearer role descriptions, more targeted promotion and a tailored application process helped potential volunteers make better-informed choices about the opportunities that were right for them.
The result? Less time wasted for staff, better-informed applicants and stronger engagement from volunteers.
The CHAS experience shows that effective volunteer recruitment isn't necessarily about doing more – sometimes it's about being clearer about what you're asking people to do and making the process work better for everyone.
Recognised as an achiever of Investing in Volunteers, CHAS provides a strong example of good volunteer practice and demonstrates how small changes to recruitment can make a meaningful difference.
