Volunteer Glasgow has recently published a web-page informed by DWP with guidance for people on benefits around how volunteering can affect their eligibility to continue receiving those benefits (the advice is applicable across all of Scotland).
Clarifications include:
- If jobseekers have a claimant commitment, they can include volunteering if their work coach agrees
- Volunteering can help them get skills, experience and references, and can count for up to half of their job search time
Those with limited capability for work can still volunteer, but:
- Only doing tasks they are able to do, making sure the volunteering doesn’t go against the reasons the claimant got their benefit
- Involving roles that help the claimants health and wellbeing
