Changes to Adult Support and Protection (ASP) Timescales from 31 August 2026

Created: 25/08/2026
News/Events Category: Health and Social Care

The Adult Support and Protection Committee (ASPC) has approved changes to local Adult Support and Protection (ASP) timescales, which will take effect from 31 August 2026.

Following a review of local performance information, the ASPC agreed that revised timescales would provide more realistic and meaningful performance measures, better reflecting the complexity of multi-agency ASP work.

From 31 August 2026, the following timescales will apply:

ASP Process Current Timescale Revised Timescale
Inter-agency Referral Discussion (IRD) 5 working days 10 working days
ASP Investigation 10 working days 15 working days

It is important to note that these changes do not alter statutory duties under the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007, nor do they change the requirement to take immediate and proportionate action where an adult may be at risk of harm. Interim safeguarding arrangements must continue to be implemented where required, and staff should continue to progress ASP activity as promptly as possible.

Please ensure that relevant staff within your service or agency are made aware of these revised arrangements prior to implementation.
