What does digital violence look like, and what impact does it have on young women and girls?

The Young Women’s Movement is inviting young women, trans women and non-binary people aged 16–30 who live in Scotland to share their experiences and views as part of a new national research project.

The research will form the eighth edition of the Status of Young Women in Scotland series, which has previously explored issues including human rights, access to healthcare, employment, body image and political engagement.

This latest report will focus on digital violence against young women and girls – and its real-life impact.

Why does digital violence matter?

Digital violence refers to harmful behaviours that take place online or through technology. This can include abuse, harassment, threats and other forms of harm experienced through digital spaces.

Importantly, digital violence doesn't exist separately from violence in the physical world. Online and offline violence against women and girls are closely connected, with technology and digital platforms increasingly being used to intensify abuse.

At the same time, digital spaces can play a hugely positive role in young women's lives – providing opportunities for connection, creativity, education, advocacy and financial independence.

Understanding both sides of this experience is important.

Your voice can help shape change

The Young Women’s Movement wants to hear directly from young people about their experiences and perspectives.

If you're a young woman, trans woman or non-binary person aged 16–30 living in Scotland, you can take part in the survey.

The survey takes around 20 minutes to complete, and participation is entirely optional. Responses are anonymous and confidential.

By taking part, you can help build a clearer picture of the issues facing young women and girls in Scotland today. The findings will be used to engage with government, decision-makers and service providers and help ensure young women’s voices are heard.

As a thank you for taking part, you can also enter a prize draw to win a £50 Prezzee voucher and a limited-edition scarf made from 100% lambswool in The Young Women’s Movement’s custom centenary tartan.
