Cessation of Volunteering - Research Findings

Created: 10/08/2026
News/Events Category: Volunteering

Researchers from Newcastle University have conducted research into the cessation of volunteering in older adults with the aim of providing a rich understanding of the experiences of older volunteers, and the staff managing them, as they move out of one form of civic participation (and potentially into another).

In 2025, they carried out a survey of volunteer managers from across all volunteer-involving sectors and the whole of the UK.

The survey was based on the findings from their interviews with staff at their case study organisations. Their goal was, partly, to understand whether what they had learnt from their case studies would resonate with volunteer managers (and other people who work with volunteers) in the wider heritage sector and beyond. They also wanted to learn from a wider set of volunteer managers so that they could develop a stronger evidence base for their (forthcoming) 'toolkit' of good practices in this part of volunteer management.

They have written a report on their findings which can be accessed here.
