Scotland's Charity Sector Remains Strong - and Fife Continues to Play a Vital Role
Created: 29/07/2026Scotland's charity sector continues to demonstrate its resilience, with the latest figures from OSCR showing a stable and thriving landscape that supports communities across the country.
The newly published Sector Overview Report provides an annual snapshot of Scotland's charities, revealing a sector that continues to make a significant impact despite ongoing financial and operational challenges.
According to the report, there are currently 24,946 charities listed on the Scottish Charity Register, with 926 new charities registered during 2025.
While many people associate charities with large national organisations, the report highlights that the vast majority are much smaller community-led groups. Most Scottish charities have an annual income of less than £25,000, relying on the dedication of local people to deliver essential services and activities.
Volunteers remain the backbone of the sector. Around 151,397 trustees help guide charities across Scotland, while two-thirds of all charities operate without any paid staff, relying entirely on volunteers – including their trustees – to keep services running.
The report also shows that overall charity income and expenditure have increased over the past year, reflecting a sector that continues to invest in supporting people and communities across Scotland.
The figures also underline the strength of Fife's own third sector.
Across the Kingdom, there are:
These organisations make an enormous contribution to local life, supporting people of all ages and backgrounds through services ranging from health and wellbeing and community development to employability, volunteering, education and environmental action.
