Social Security Scotland: Changes to Motability Scheme leases
Created: 28/07/2026Motability have announced changes to new Motability Scheme leases. These changes will take effect for customers who receive their allowance from Social Security Scotland from 1 September 2026.
Motability have contacted eligible customers directly.
The Motability Scheme operates under a separate agreement in Scotland, called the Accessible Vehicles and Equipment Scheme (AVES).
As a result of Motability’s discussions with the Scottish Government, Motability has been reviewing how it can support customers living in the most rural areas, since this can often mean having to travel further to access essential services, like employment, healthcare and education. Eligible customers in the most isolated rural and island areas will therefore be able to receive an additional 3,000 miles per year on top of their allowance.
Motability also has a process for customers who need to drive more than 3,000 miles each year above the 10,000 standard annual inclusive mileage for essential purposes. These customers will be able to apply for support with the increased excess mileage charge that will apply from 1 September 2026.
More information is available on the Motability Scheme website.
