Fife College Staff Make a Difference Off Campus
Created: 08/07/2026
Fife Voluntary Action worked with Trust in Fife and STAR – Siblings Reunited to arrange volunteering days for staff from Fife College’s Student Experience department.
Fife College give their staff paid time off to volunteer in the local community, and the student experience team arranged days in Kirkcaldy and North East Fife to support charities doing good for Fife’s community.
The first team chose to volunteer with Trust in Fife, a housing and homelessness charity that provides temporary accommodation, one-to-one housing and independent living support, and more. The Fife College team spent their day painting four bedrooms in one of their homeless accommodation units in Kirkcaldy.
Caroline McCall, CEO of Trust in Fife said “It was great to welcome staff from Fife College to the Valley Accommodation Unit on their volunteer day. We had reached out to FVA to get some help decorating some of the bedrooms within one of our hostels and the Fife College team offered up their time, which was greatly appreciated. The team decorated three bedrooms for us and we really appreciate them selecting our Charity. The clients staying in the rooms decorated were pleased with the upgrades!”
The second team volunteered with STAR – Siblings Reunited, a charity that reunites Brothers and Sisters separated in the care system for quality and regular Sibling contact. Run from its unique farmland setting it provides a safe, fun and exhilarating learning environment where children can foster emotional bonds. The staff from Fife College helped out in the garden, making the area tidy and pleasant for the children that attend STAR.
Karen Morrison, Manager at STAR, shared “We were absolutely delighted to welcome the Fife College ESV team to STAR. As a charity with a large rural site to care for and continually develop, support from volunteer teams like this makes a genuine difference to us. The team worked incredibly hard, achieved so much in just one day and were an absolute pleasure to have at STAR.
Everything they helped us with contributes to making STAR a welcoming, safe and special place where brothers and sisters who have been separated through care can spend meaningful time together and create precious memories. We are incredibly grateful to the whole team for giving their time, energy and enthusiasm to support our work."
Carol Hunter, Health and Wellbeing Advisor at Fife College, said "Volunteering is a great reminder that even a few hours of our time can make a meaningful difference to those in our local community. A huge thank you to the team at Trust in Fife and STAR for making us feel so welcome, to Fife Voluntary Action for coordinating the opportunity, and to Fife College for empowering staff to support local organisations through paid volunteering leave".
This is a great example of Employer-Supported Volunteering (ESV), where a company offers their employees paid time off to volunteer during work hours. For employees, an ESV programme can help them acquire new skills, develop themselves within their community, and provide a sense of wellbeing. For companies, this can boost employee morale, wellbeing and engagement, and boost their brand within the community. In return, third sector organisations gain essential skills and support and raise the profile of the vital work they’re doing.
