Faster Access to Disability Benefits for Terminally Ill People
Created: 26/06/2026A new resource page on the Social Security Scotland website highlights all the guidance doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals need to help their terminally-ill patients access financial support.
Terminally-ill people in Scotland can get faster access to disability benefits through the Special Rules for Terminal Illness.
Eligible people will automatically get the highest possible payment and are encouraged to apply via a dedicated fast-tracked route by completing a shortened terminal illness application form.
To ensure access to this fast-track route, Social Security Scotland needs a registered doctor or nurse involved in the person’s diagnosis and/or care to confirm their terminal diagnosis. They do this by completing a Benefits Assessment under Special Rules in Scotland (BASRiS) form and submitting it as soon as possible after the terminal diagnosis is made, even if their patient is not aware of their prognosis.
The new terminal illness resources page brings together all the guidance available for clinicians, including FAQs, factsheets and a webinar.
