  • “Right to Try” - An Update on Benefits and Volunteering

    Created: 13/06/2026
    News/Events Category: Volunteering

Barriers to work and volunteering are being removed for disabled benefit claimants as new legislation is introduced. Disabled benefit claimants will be given the right to try work without the immediate fear of losing their benefits, with new legislation laid in April.

While volunteering does not usually impact benefits, claimants need to be aware of the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) rules on, for example, legitimate out-of-pocket expenses – or how volunteering can be included in claimant commitments. However, many people whose claims have been subject to DWP work capability assessments due to disability or health conditions have been very wary of volunteering. The new legislation aims to remove these barriers to volunteering and work to allow people with disabilities the right to try.
