Fife College Students Let Their Community Spirit Grow
Created: 03/06/2026Two Fife College Healthcare classes from their Dunfermline and Levenmouth campuses recently approached Fife Voluntary Action to find out more about volunteering.
Fife Voluntary Action attended both classes to deliver Step into Volunteering training over two days. The training covers an introduction to volunteering, its benefits and types of roles; and practical considerations for volunteering including confidentiality, boundaries, biases, and applying to volunteer. The classes engaged in discussions and activities, and learned about the volunteering they could engage with to help them with a career in healthcare.
Following the training, both classes went out to put their learning into action by completing team challenges with local charities. The Levenmouth class volunteered with CLEAR, a charity in Buckhaven that engages local people to improve the environment and community. The class enjoyed a day in the fresh air, and got stuck in with some gardening and weeding.
Kim from CLEAR said “It was lovely to have yourself along with the group of Healthcare students to our Buckhaven Growing Space . It was a very positive experience and the group was very engaging which made a difference. They worked through the list of tasks assigned including Potting up Tomatoes, Weeding , Ground maintenance and Tidying of poly tunnels ( these tasks vary depending on the time of the year) The group asked lots of questions and had a real interest in what we are trying to achieve through CLEAR , which is using gardening as Horticulture Therapy to help with people's mental health and social anxiety.”
The Dunfermline class volunteered at The Sanctuary Garden, a Dunfermline-based greenspace aiming to grow and share organic food, educating people about health and sustainability, and promoting the outdoors for health and wellbeing. The team braved some wet weather to learn about the garden, to lay cardboard and compost, and to meet the resident chickens!
The students from both groups enjoyed their volunteering, and the opportunity to come together as a group. Some students have even made plans to go back and continue volunteering at both organisations.
Natalie Anderson and Linzi Shand, Lecturers at Fife College, said “We are incredibly grateful for the strong partnership we have developed with FVA. The volunteering opportunities have enabled our learners to give back to their local community, develop valuable skills, and experience the positive impact that volunteering can have on both themselves and others.”
Fife Voluntary Action were delighted by the positive response from students and look forward to supporting many more teams of volunteers from Fife College and beyond. If you or your team or would be interested in volunteering, please contact the Volunteering Development Team at [email protected].
