Make Your Mark: Involving Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Volunteer Engagement
Created: 29/04/2026Learn about how Suffolk Archives provided volunteering opportunities to those living in two Home Office hotels in Ipswich.
Suffolk Archives embarked on an ambitious project with Volunteering Matters to provide volunteering opportunities to those living in two Home Office hotels in Ipswich. Together they navigated language barriers, cultural and religious differences, travel difficulties and overcoming the understanding of what an archive is.
The project spanned from 2022-2024 and finished due to the closure of the hotels. The blueprint which resulted can be applied to many different areas of our communities that may be hard to reach or perhaps have not engaged before.
Discover how Volunteering Matters and Suffolk Archives navigated these challenges, built strong relationships within the hotels and the lasting impact it had on all those involved. The residents gained valuable skills through social interactions within a professional setting and Suffolk Archives accrued a much needed enthusiastic volunteer force.
