Increase in Scam Calls Pretending to be Citizens Advice
Created: 16/04/2026Citizens Advice and Rights Fife has experienced a spike in the number of clients contacting them due to scammers pretending to be calling from Citizens Advice.
Jacqueline McDonald, Head of Operations at Citizens Advice Fife advises of recent incidents where members of the public have been called by someone claiming to be from Citizens Advice confirming home addresses and banks. The scammers tried to elicit further information including the bank account details but fortunately the members of the public recognised some inaccuracies in information that was being given and hung up the calls.
Scammers often use mobile phones, some do not accept an incoming call back, but others do and will often have 'contact centre' noise in the background.
If you are in any doubt, hang up and call your bank, service provider or Citizens Advice on the official number to check. Banks and service providers will never ask you to confirm personal information such as PIN or offer to bring money to your home.
If a scammer has any of your personal information, such as address or bank provider consider changing passwords for online services in case these have been compromised.
