TaxAid's New Criteria for Making Referrals
Created: 23/06/2025TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People have seen the demand for specialist tax support services increase over the last few years. They acknowledge that this change has been felt across the sector with most charities facing the challenge of supporting people with increasing costs and falling living standards.
As a result of this prolonged period of economic uncertainty, and the limited resources available to small charities to support a growing population of people living in poverty, TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People have renewed their commitment to beneficiaries and their partners to provide tax support to all who need it.
New criteria
To determine if someone is eligible for support from TaxAid's specialist tax team, they will consider both their financial and personal circumstances. In respect of their financial circumstances, they will consider their annual income and whether it is below the individual Minimum Income Standard (MIS) currently £28,000 and whether they have personal unsecured debts or savings. They will also consider their personal circumstances and whether they are suffering from disadvantages or vulnerabilities that prevent them from getting the help they need, regardless of their financial position.
TaxAid know that there are many other factors that have an impact on affordability, such as the cost of living in the local area and/or caring responsibilities, and they can take these into account when reviewing their needs and unique circumstances.
Making referrals
They hope that these changes to their eligibility criteria will mean your service users ar more likely to get the help they need.
Making referrals to their specialist support will not change - you or your beneficiaries can call 0345 120 3779 (TaxAid) or 01308 488066 (Tax Help for Older People), 9.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.
