  • Penumbra: Transforming Mental Health Support in Angus

    Created: 05/05/2025
News/Events Category: Health and Social Care

Commissioned by Angus Health and Social Care Partnership, Penumbra’s South Angus Peer Support Service runs from five local GP surgeries. They also offer peer support for young people aged 11–15 in South Angus secondary schools.

Jim McEvoy, Peer Support Mental Health and Wellbeing Worker, and Steve Hardie, Assistant Service Manager, share how this early intervention service is transforming local mental health while easing pressure on the NHS.

Click here to watch Jim and Steve talk about the service with Eilidh from Scottish Recovery Network.

Developed from this conversation they have put together a list of reasons peer support is transforming mental health support in the area.

    1. High engagement and flexible support
    2. Lived experience at the core
    3. Rapid access to help
    4. Holistic role of peer workers
    5. Proven impact and longevity
    6. Preventing escalation to intensive services
    7. Embedded in multi-discplinary teams
    8. Enhanced information gathering
    9. Addressing real-life stressors
    10. Supporting recovery, not just treatment
