  • John Muir Award

    Created: 01/04/2025
    News/Events Category: Funding and Finance
This item will show under the following categories: Children and Families   Health and Social Care

The John Muir Award encourages people of all backgrounds to connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places. Participants learn about the special attributes of wild places and the Award helps them Discover, Explore, Conserve and Share their experience of wild places.

They are delighted to announce that proposals are now being accepted for the redesigned John Muir Award.

Initially, this is just for the Wild Places Guardian level, previously known as the Discovery Award. Further levels, referred to as the Wild Places Protector and Wild Places Champion will be rolled out in due course.

    Who can take part?

The John Muir Award is open to anyone who can understand and meet the Award criteria. In their experience, this usually means people who are working at upper primary learning level and above.

Participation can be through an organisation, as an individual, or family, or in your own small independent group. Adults are welcome, and actively encouraged, to get involved but the Award isn’t suitable for nursery or lower primary learning level groups.

They offer providers (organisations or groups that deliver the award):

    • Support, guidance and advice on the delivery of the John Muir Award
    • Promotional materials and resources
    • Free digital certificates for all individuals who successfully complete an award
    • An annual certificate to recognise John Muir Award Provider status
    • Opportunities to access award training courses and events (costs may apply)

    Criteria

To achieve their John Muir Award Wild Places Guardian certificate, every participant must meet the following criteria:

    1. Spend 25 hours or more completing their John Muir Award – with at least 25% of the time spent on Conserve activity.
    2. Have an active involvement in decision making and planning of their award - this helps to build individuals’ belief that they can make a difference beyond the award.
    3. Develop awareness of an inspirational person. This should be an environmentalist, past or present, or someone making a difference to wild places locally.
    4. Complete the Four Challenges: Discover, Explore, Conserve, Share.
