  • Public Health Scotland - Improving Scotland’s diet and weight

    Created: 05/03/2025
News/Events Category: Health and Social Care

The benefits of healthy eating, active living, and maintenance of a healthy weight are widely recognised and directly associated with a wide range of health benefits. These are important routes to improving population health.

As Scotland's working age population is set to shrink in the coming years, it is vital that everyone is supported to live a long, healthy, and independent life. In addition to the obvious benefits at an individual level, making improvements to Scotland’s diet and weight at a population level is also critical for protecting public services and enabling our economy to thrive and prosper.

Public Health Scotland's Improving Scotland's diet and weight statement details why action needs to be taken and outlines key areas for action, including:

    • Policy and strategy
    • Leadership to promote healthy diet and weight, including how to frame the narrative about obesity and weight
    • Ensuring children have the best start in life
    • Places where we live, work, learn, care and play prioritise healthier food options and opportunities to be physically active
    • People have access to effective weight management support and services
