Applying for Job Start payment after you've started work
Created: 07/02/2025Young people and care leavers who secured a permanent or seasonal job during the festive season are being urged by Social Security Scotland and the Scottish Government to check if they are eligible for the Job Start Payment.
Job Start Payment is a one-off payment of £314.45 for young people aged between 16 and 24 who meet certain criteria. There is a higher rate of £503.10 for applicants who are the main carers of children. Care leavers can apply up to the day before their 26th birthday. Job Start Payment does not need to be paid back.
Please note: applicants need not have applied for the benefit before starting the job to receive it. New workers can apply for Job Start Payment up to six months after the day they received the job offer.
You need to have received a job offer and expect to work at least 12 hours a week, averaged over a four-week period.
The money can be used to pay the bills that crop up before that all-important first pay day including travelling to work, childcare costs, or buying new clothes.
