  • Minority Ethnic Women's Experience in Scotland review

    Created: 16/01/2025
    News/Events Category: Children and Families
This item will show under the following categories: Health and Social Care

The Minority Ethnic Women's Experience in Scotland review set out to answer the following questions:

    1. Where do women from minority ethnic backgrounds encounter inequitable outcomes and experiences, or barriers, to accessing services? Where are the gaps?
    2. What lessons can we learn?

Key information from the review includes:

    • There is limited data and information about the experiences of minority ethnic women and girls in Scottish schools and higher education contexts
    • The data found participation and inequitable outcomes in the labour market for minority ethnic women
    • While there are statistics about ethnicity, sex, and gender, intersectional data is often limited
    • There is limited data and information about health outcomes of minority ethnic women, however this may be because the Scottish Health Survey and Scotland's Census 2022 data was not published at the time of this report
    • Mental health statistics analysed for the report suggest that minority ethnic women do not suffer poorer mental health than comparative groups, however there is evidence to suggest that they face additional issues of racial discrimination that impact experience of mental health
    • Minority ethnic women are under-represented in political and social positions of power
    • Minority ethnic women are more likely to experience crime, discrimination, and harassment than white Scottish or British women, however under-reporting of hate crime is likely so statistics may not be an accurate reflection of experiences
