This item will show under the following categories: Children and Families

The Women’s Health Plan was published in August 2021 and sets out how the Scottish Government intends to address inequalities in women’s health outcomes. It includes 66 actions over six priority areas:

    1. Menopause
    2. Menstrual health
    3. Endometriosis
    4. Abortion and contraception
    5. Postnatal contraception
    6. Heart health

The Plan focusses on creating the conditions that can change culture, support women’s health, and tackle the inequalities that have affected women’s health for generations.

This report sets out the progress made towards the delivery of the actions in the Plan in the three years since publication.

The key actions in the Plan include:

    • Establish a central platform for information on women’s health on NHS Inform
    • Improve access to abortion services
    • Improve access to contraception services, including  rapid and easily accessible  postnatal contraception
    • Improve access to information for girls and women on menstrual health and management options and; Improve access for women to appropriate support, speedy diagnosis, and best treatment for endometriosis
    • Ensure women who need it have access to specialist menopause services for advice and support on diagnosis and management of the menopause
    • Reduce inequalities  in health outcomes related to  heart disease
    • Reduce inequalities in outcomes for women’s general health

    Conclusions

As stated in the report, despite the progress made, a recent paper published in the Lancet noted that "Women's health across the UK is in decline".

To achieve their ambition for women and girls in Scotland, they will be looking at what has changed, positively and negatively, since the publication of the Plan in August 2021, and where additional focus is needed.

Over the coming months, they will be working with women and girls, healthcare professionals, academics, and the third sector across Scotland to ask what they want to see in the next phase of the Women's Health Plan.
