  • Fife Peer Support Network Celebration - Our peer champions 2024

    Created: 02/12/2024
News/Events Category: Health and Social Care

The Fife Peer Support Network celebrated all things peer on Friday 29 November 2024 at Caledonia House in Glenrothes.

Hosted by Fife Voluntary Action's (FVA's) Peer Support Team, we were delighted to host another of our annual celebrations.

The event recognises the people championing Peer in Fife, presentations from a range of speakers, and an opportunity to connect with network members.

    Speakers included:

Kenny Armour from Andy's Man Club

Andy's Man Club is for any man over the age of 18 who needs to talk. They opened a new group at the Benarty Centre which will run every Monday night 7.00-9.00. This is a big step towards increasing the number of clubs across Fife.

Lesley Smith from Scottish Recovery Network

Scottish Recovery Network work with communities and organisations across Scotland to help them develop Peer Support. Their future goals include more prevention, early intervention, and recovery when it comes to mental health.

Jacquie Mellon from Fife Voluntary Action

Jacquie, FVA's Head of Health and Social Care, gave an overview of the past year in Peer in Fife. This has included two Peer Support Network gatherings in 2024, with another scheduled for February 2025. There has also been Peer training available for organisations across Fife.

Huge congratulations to all the Peer Champions recognised during the event:

    • Maggie Wright, Families in Trauma and Recovery - “Maggie works tirelessly in her work furthering peer. She inspires people, fights for their human rights as evidenced by her joining the British Institute of Human Rights, and supports them to live meaningful lives. This award is so richly deserved.”
    • Ashley McGinley, Peer Support Network - “Ashley has continuously demonstrated her enthusiasm and passion for peer support and developing her peer practice. She was a valued participant on a peer course and continues to attend numerous training and development opportunities.”
    • Kay Johnstone, Peer Support Network - “Kay has shown a real commitment to developing their own peer practice, including completing the Families in Trauma and Recovery's full training with eCPR. They are always thoughtful and engaged, bringing a huge amount to trainings and events.”

    Kay Johnstone

    • Lee Hutton, Change Mental Health - “Lee uses her own lived experience to help break down barriers for groups and build a trusting and safe environment. Lee recently started up a new group specifically for LGBTQI+ for in-depth discussion about the challenges they have faced with mental health.”
    • Fiona Glanville, SAMH - “Fiona has raised the bar in terms of peer-led support in Fife. Her enthusiasm for supporting people to reach their fullest potential is an inspiration to all SAMH colleagues.”

    Fiona Glanville from SAMH

    • Ross Parker, Scottish Autism - “Ross has been central to work with the One Stop Shop over the last 15 months. He recognises the value of peer support for the autistic community and has also helped develop an LGBTQI+ space in collaboration with The Hive. He has worked hard to create a safe space of belonging and connection to others.”
    • Families in Trauma and Recovery (FiTaR) - “FiTaR has worked tirelessly to provide help and support to both families and individuals experiencing trauma for over a decade. They’ve developed excellent training courses and I can’t recommend them enough. They are a truly supportive peer oriented organisation that deserves recognition for their work - they are indeed a Champion.”
