Volunteering can provide a meaningful opportunity for people of any age, but particularly for those later in life. A 2019 study in the Australian Journal of Psychology found the more people volunteer, the more their life satisfaction increases.

    Health Benefits

Volunteering has a number of benefits, including improving your physical and mental wellbeing. A 2020 review of 13,000 participants in the Health and Retirement Study in America found that if someone volunteers for at least 100 hours per year (less than two hours per week) for four years, they experienced:

    • Reduced risk of mortality
    • Reduced risk of physical limitations
    • Increased physical activity
    • Better mental outcomes, such as feeling more optimistic

    Great Opportunities for Older Adults

    1. Befriending - this includes meeting with other adults for companionship and going to take part in various activities
    2. Volunteering close to home - we have a range of opportunities in all areas of Fife, so we can find you one close to home
    3. Trustees - with a lifetime of work experience, it's likely you'll have the skills that are needed on a charity's board of trustees
    4. Community gardens - there are community gardens all across Fife that need help with activities like planting and sowing, garden maintenance, and events
    5. Mentoring - share your skills and experience with someone who's just getting started
    6. Micro-volunteering - why not get a group of friends together and sign up to help out at an event such as a half marathon or gala? It'll be a great bonding experience!
    7. Lived experience - there's a high chance you have lots of lived experience you can share with others, such as caring for a family member or experiencing different illnesses
    8. Driving - lots of organisations need help getting their service users from A to B
