Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society turns 150
Created: 26/08/2024The theme for Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society's (KSO) 2024/25 season is 'Celebrations 150'. The music and concert performances will span the 150 years of KSO, from 1875 to 2025. The March 2025 concert will mark the 150th year of the orchestra's existence, albeit under a variety of titles and with the combination of other local orchestras and ensembles over the years.
The orchestra is now rehearsing for its new season and they have a number of performances scheduled for Kirkcaldy's Old Kirk.
The theme of ‘Celebrations 150!, 1875 – 2025’ offers wide-ranging opportunities and will be linked by a musical theme, that of the Prelude from the Te Deum by Charpentier, better known, perhaps, as the European Broadcasting Union’s theme tune.
Music as varied as Jeux d’enfants, Bizet, Morning from Peer Gynt, Grieg, the new A Wee Fife Festival Overture, Gourlay, Troika from Lt Kijé, Prokofiev, the Karelia Suite, Sibelius and Crown Imperial, Walton and much more will fill the programmes for the three main concerts.
The October concert will also celebrate composers who have written for KOS: John Gourlay, see above, Eoin Hamilton, his Scottish Sketches, and Bruce Fraser, his Air ‘N’ The Strings Plus for baritone and orchestra with the international baritone soloist Katrina Marzella-Wheeler for whom the piece was written in 2008.
The March 2025 concert will feature the next in the series of Old Kirk Concertos by John Gourlay, No 5 and featuring KOS principal ‘cellist Katie O’Neil.
Concerts are planned for Tuesday 01 October, Sunday 15 December along with the Langtoun Singers, an appearance at Fife Festival of Music in February 2025, and 23 March 2025. The now well-established 'Extra' concert, featuring a mix of classical and contemporary music, will take place on 13 May 2025.
