17-year-old Rubie McNeill, from an army family in Leuchars, has created illustrated characters to show the diversity and spirit of children and young people from armed forces communities. The illustrations were created for the Forces Children Scotland's Rights Report called It's not just their job, it's our whole lives.

Rubie's characters include a character called Maude (pictured above) who play a role in making the campaign accessible and engaging for younger audiences. They all reflect the perspective of children and young people from Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force families.

The report aims to amplify the voices of children and young people from armed forces and veteran families, advocating for their rights, and issuing recommendations for authorities to act to ensure they are heard on matters affecting their lives.

In light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNRC) coming into Scots Law, the report sheds light on the distinct challenges faced by 12,500 children from armed forces families in Scotland. Forces Children Scotland believe that the report will drive meaningful change and ensure children receive the support and protection they deserve.

Rubie said "To get started, I thought, what would I picture the characters looking like if I were to think of Forces Children Scotland? So I thought I'd create someone who looks kind, helpful, and resilient. Armed forces children need better access to local services like healthcare and mental health support. Young people from armed forces communities can experience issues because they move around lots or their parents may have issues too, like PTSD."
