Mental Health Awareness Week - FVA's Alyson does sensory deprivation floating for mental wellbeing
Created: 08/05/2024
As I have a very busy stressful life, I look for things which I call “soul food” - things that will give me enjoyment quickly, but also things that ground me, such as animals and mindfulness.
However after my husband was diagnosed I struggled with my mental health and finding time for my own wellbeing, often finding situations difficult. I looked online for quick fixes that would give me the energy I needed. Whilst looking I came across an advert for floating, at a flotation spa.
I tried it out and started going to a flotation spa once per month. I started at a spa in Edinburgh before moving to one in Bathgate.
Sensory deprivation floating has helped relieve my tension caused by external pressures and it allows me to refresh my mind and relaxed. I've also found it's helped improve my sleep pattern and control my anxiety and stress.
I would recommend trying out floating to anyone who suffers poor sleep, anxiety or stress. There is a flotation spa in Kirkcaldy that is a good starting point. They don't practice sensory deprivation but it gives you a feel for what to expect.
