  • Test of UK Emergency Alerts Service announced

    Created: 07/04/2023
    News/Events Category: General News

The UK Government has announced that the first large-scale test of the new Emergency Alerts system will take place on Sunday 23 April 2023 at 15:00.

The system works with more modern versions of Android and iOS smartphones, and will do the following:

    • make a loud, siren-like sound - even if the phone has been set to silent
    • vibrate
    • push a text alert to the phone, and
    • read the text alert out loud.

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.

The system is intended to be used in the future to alert people to relevant major incidents, such as wildfires, severe flooding and extreme weather. Similar systems have been deployed abroad with some success.

The Emergency Alert System overrides the volume controls of compatible smartphones and makes a very loud noise. This creates a potential risk for those - such as victims of ongoing abuse- who might have a concealed smartphone. Such phones should be turned off in time for the test. Disabling the alerts on most phones is possible, and you should check how to do so with your service provider.
