  • Misogyny – A Human Rights Issue

    Created: 08/03/2022

    The Working Group on Misogyny and Criminal Justice was established in February 2021 and in the months that followed it examined a large body of oral and written evidence and reviewed extensive research into women’s experience of misogynistic conduct. recommending that the Scottish Government creates a specific piece of legislation to protect women from abuses that blight their lives

    The Group recently published its independent report which proposes the implementation of a new Misogyny and Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act. The Act includes creating a new:

    • Statutory Misogyny Aggravation which operates outside of the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021;
    • offence of Stirring Up Hatred Against Women and Girls;
    • offence of Public Misogynistic Harassment;
    • offence of Issuing Threats of, or Invoking, Rape or Sexual Assault or Disfigurement of Women and Girls online and offline.
