Aims and objectivesCLEAR (Community-Led Environmental Action for Regeneration) was established by residents in 2007, becoming a SCIO in 2012. It addresses the poverty of people and place through two main aims, improving the local environment; and building civic pride and community engagement in the disadvantaged, neglected towns of Buckhaven and Methil (population 15,000), part of the Levenmouth conurbation on mid-Fife coast, an ex-mining community suffering high levels of deprivation. CLEAR runs a significant environmental improvement programme to uplift the public space in Buckhaven and Methil. This includes major community planting, growing and enhancement programme, including community orchard clusters, woodlands, and developing two large and several smaller community gardens. Other major activities include floral enhancement. Important site-based projects have regenerated prominent greenspaces including Starkies Wood, Methilhaven Rd, Tollpark, Viewforth, College St, Kirkland Drive and Foreshore. Involving local volunteers and groups in this community effort is central to the People and Place approach CLEAR runs two volunteer sessions, 3 days per week year-round engaging individuals, local schools, nurseries, college, other groups, including many facing challenges who gain through getting involved in practical healthy, sociable, outdoor activity while taking pride in making a visible positive impact. Up to 50 are regularly involved, and many more occasionally. Community placemaking efforts feature distinctive community art and heritage. Regular cleanups are organised plus recycling - pallet & paint, bike repair and cycling workshop (men’s shed), healthy living initiative plus Community Fridge (addressing food insecurity). Volunteers learn new skills and benefit from meals provided.
