A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE VIETNAMESE
HERITAGE AND
FREEDOM FLAG AS THE OFFICIAL SYMBOL OF
ARLINGTONS
VIETNAMESE-AMERICAN COMMUNITY
RESOLUTION NO. 03-E-555
November 11th, 2003
WHEREAS, there are a significant
number of Vietnamese-Americans who have chosen to make the City of Arlington
their home; and
WHEREAS, Arlingtons
Vietnamese-American community has made substantial contributions to the
cultural, religious, political and business life of the City of Arlington; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of
Arlingtons Vietnamese-Americans embrace the yellow with three red stripes
Heritage and Freedom Flag as the official symbol of the Vietnamese-American
community; and
WHEREAS, this yellow flag with three
red stripes is widely embraced because of its long history as a symbol of
resilience, freedom and democracy both in Vietnam itself and
Vietnamese-American communities throughout Arlington and elsewhere; and
WHEREAS, Arlingtons
Vietnamese-Americans have proudly raised this Heritage and Freedom Flag alongside
the flag of the United States as a demonstration of their support for freedom
and democracy in their country of origin and in protest to the violations of
basic human and civil rights of the current government of Vietnam; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARLINGTON, TEXAS:
I. That the Arlington City
Council formally recognizes the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag as the
official symbol of the Arlington Vietnamese-American community and supports the
efforts of the Arlington Vietnamese-American community to promote freedom and
democracy in their country of origin.
II. That the Arlington City
Council opposes any actions or statements that would offend the Arlington
Vietnamese-American community that contributes so much to the vitality and
stability of our neighborhoods.

on this the 11th day of November, 2003, by a vote of 9 ayes and zero nays at a
regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Arlington,
Texas.
